Today's Point: Jesus Knows My Worth
Jesus was traveling through Samaria when he stopped at a well to rest and get a drink of water. A Samaritan woman was at the well, and Jesus asked her for a drink of water. The woman was surprised and asked, “Why would you want a drink from me? I am a Samaritan and you are a Jew.
Normally, Samaritans and Jews did not spend time together. The woman looked at Jesus and said, “You don’t even have a bucket. How do you plan to get water?” Jesus explained the woman could have living water and never be thirsty again.
The Samaritan woman asked, “Where can I get this water? Who are you?” Jesus told the woman to bring her husband back to the well to receive the living water. The woman replied, “I don’t have a husband.” Jesus recognized the woman was telling the truth. Jesus told her about how many times she had been married.
The woman realized Jesus knew things about her that no one had told Him; she recognized He was different. The woman told Jesus, “I know the Messiah is coming, and when He gets here, He will explain everything to us.”
Then, Jesus revealed He was the Messiah the Samaritan woman was talking about! The disciples had just returned from town and saw Jesus talking with the Samaritan woman. “Why is Jesus talking with a woman, and she’s a Samaritan?” wondered the disciples. No one asked Jesus what they were thinking.
The Samaritan woman told others in the town about Jesus, the Savior. She explained Jesus told her things about her life that only He could know. Many people came to Jesus and asked Him to stay in the town longer.
Jesus stayed in the town for two days, and many Samaritans came to recognize Him as the Savior of the world.
